Therapeutic Art Workshop for Kids
Age Group: 6–12 years
Duration: 6–8 weeks, 1 session per week (60–90 minutes each)
Focus: Identifying and expressing emotions in a safe and creative environment.
Week 1: Welcome and Emotional Awareness
• Objective: Introduce the concept of emotions and safe self-expression.
• Activities:
• Icebreaker: “Feelings Charades” (acting out emotions like happy, sad, scared).
• Art Activity: “My Feelings Palette” – kids create a color chart linking colors to their emotions.
• Reflection: Share what each color represents and why.
Week 2: Identifying Emotions
• Objective: Help kids recognize emotions through sensory experiences.
• Activities:
• Storytime: Read a short story about a character experiencing different emotions.
• Art Activity: Draw or paint how the story’s character might feel.
• Reflection: Discuss their artwork and relate it to personal feelings.
Week 3: Exploring Triggers
• Objective: Understand what causes different emotions.
• Activities:
• “Emotion Cloud Mapping” – kids draw and connect things that make them feel certain emotions.
• Art Activity: Create a “Feeling Monster” that represents a big emotion (e.g., anger or sadness).
• Reflection: Talk about what the “monster” says or does.
Week 4: Expressing Emotions Safely
• Objective: Learn ways to process and release emotions.
• Activities:
• Movement warm-up: Shake out negative feelings.
• Art Activity: “Emotion Scribbles” – turn a chaotic scribble into a meaningful picture.
• Reflection: Share the transformation of their scribbles.
Week 5: Building Emotional Resilience
• Objective: Teach coping skills through art.
• Activities:
• Visualization: “Draw Your Safe Place.”
• Collage Activity: Create a “Resilience Shield” decorated with positive words and images.
• Reflection: Discuss how the shield protects them emotionally.
Week 6: Celebrating Emotions
• Objective: Emphasize that all emotions are valid and can be celebrated.
• Activities:
• Group Mural: Each child contributes a piece representing their favorite feeling.
• Showcase and celebration: Reflect on their art journey.
• Closing Activity: “Emotion Memory Jar” – kids write or draw their favorite activity/lesson to take home.
Therapeutic Art Workshop for Adults & Seniors
Age Group: 18+
Duration: 6–8 weeks, 1 session per week (90–120 minutes each)
Focus: Identifying, processing, and transforming emotional experiences into healing.
Week 1: Introduction and Emotional Foundations
• Objective: Build a safe space for self-expression and set personal goals.
• Activities:
• Icebreaker: Share an emotion and its associated color.
• Art Activity: “Emotion Wheel” – create a personalized chart of emotions and colors.
• Reflection: Discuss emotional literacy and individual goals.
Week 2: Unpacking Emotional Layers
• Objective: Explore the complexity of feelings.
• Activities:
• Journaling Warm-up: Write about a recent emotional experience.
• Art Activity: “Layered Emotions” – use translucent materials to represent overlapping feelings.
• Reflection: How emotions interact or overlap in life.
Week 3: Understanding Emotional Triggers
• Objective: Identify and visually represent emotional triggers.
• Activities:
• Guided Discussion: What are emotional triggers, and how do they impact us?
• Art Activity: Create a “Trigger Map” – visual connections between emotions and experiences.
• Reflection: Identify patterns or recurring themes.
Week 4: Transforming Pain into Growth
• Objective: Use art to reframe challenging emotions.
• Activities:
• Visualization: Imagine emotions as a landscape.
• Art Activity: “Emotional Landscapes” – paint or draw how their feelings evolve over time.
• Reflection: What elements represent hope or change?
Week 5: Coping Strategies Through Art
• Objective: Build a toolkit for emotional self-care.
• Activities:
• Breathwork or mindfulness exercise.
• Art Activity: Create a “Coping Collage” with affirmations, soothing imagery, and colors.
• Reflection: Discuss how these tools can be applied daily.
Week 6: Empowerment and Closure
• Objective: Celebrate progress and reinforce self-awareness.
• Activities:
• Art Activity: Create a “Victory Banner” – a symbolic representation of emotional growth.
• Group Reflection: Share key takeaways and next steps.
• Closing Ceremony: Showcase artwork and celebrate progress with the group.
Additional Elements
• Guest Speakers: Invite a mental health professional to discuss emotions and coping strategies.
